ABOUT THE ROLE
The Division of Family and Child Health of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene seeks a School Health Nurse Practitioner to plan, develop, and deliver clinical services to high school students. Reporting to the High School Nursing Director with clinical collaboration from the High School Medical leadership team, this role focuses on adolescent medical care, reproductive health (particularly the CATCH Program), and promoting health equity, social justice, and well-being for NYC families and children.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work within the mandates, policies, and protocols of the Office of School Health (OSH).
- Support clinical initiatives, with a particular focus on the Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Health Care (CATCH) Program.
- Provide a full range of sexual and reproductive health services, including pregnancy tests, contraception, counseling, and education.
- Conduct physical examinations for sports, working papers, and new admission requirements.
- Independently examine patients, formulate diagnoses, direct or perform therapeutic treatment, and counsel patients on care.
- Improve student health through case management of chronic disease, preventive health screening, counseling, health education, and referrals.
- Utilize the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to maintain adequate student health records.
- Support the development of school educational and prevention programs and provide trainings to school staff, community organizations, or parents.
- Assist in administering staff training and orientation for new CATCH nurses.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. A valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse, a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college, and a master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field, plus four years of recent experience in public health or hospital nursing or a related field; at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, or educational capacity, or in supervision of professional public health nursing personnel.
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. However, all candidates must possess a valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse, a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college, and the 18 months of specialized experience described above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Licensure: All candidates must possess and maintain a valid New York State License as a Registered Nurse and a valid New York State Nurse Practitioner License for the duration of employment.
- Preferred: Valid NYS license as a Pediatric or Family Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of 3600 hours of licensed NP experience.
- Preferred: Clinical experience in family planning and adolescent health, knowledge of current family planning standards, and familiarity with best practices for working with adolescents.
- Preferred: Effective communication, interpersonal, and computer skills (Microsoft Office, Electronic Medical Records), and the ability to travel to various school locations across NYC.
- Safety Compliance: Must follow all safety, security, blood-borne pathogen exposure, infection control, and hazardous materials policies (including PPE, hand hygiene, and sharps safety).
