About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Prince William County Department of Public Safety Communications is seeking a motivated and technically skilled professional to serve as a 9-1-1 Systems Administrator. This role supports the County's Call Handling Equipment, voice-related networks, and telephony systems used in the 9-1-1 Center. The Administrator will manage the transition to modernized equipment, coordinate with vendors, manage voice logging environments, and ensure high-availability call delivery in a mission-critical public safety environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Administer, maintain, troubleshoot, and plan for the County's 9-1-1 call handling equipment, voice network, and telephony systems. - Manage the voice logging environment and databases related to call routing and processing. - Coordinate the work of vendors, contractors, and carriers who maintain and support these systems. - Prepare and support required reporting, including state 9-1-1 reporting, grant progress and reimbursement, and system performance reporting. - Provide planning recommendations and status updates to departmental and County leadership. - Contribute to the development and support of other 9-1-1 and public safety technologies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - High school diploma or G.E.D. - 7+ years of experience in telephony, VOIP, call processing, or voice logging system administration, voice engineering, networking, information technology, or public safety communications. - Preferred qualifications: - 3+ years of experience in public safety technology. - Experience with 9-1-1 call handling platforms and i3-compliant systems. - Experience administering SIP/VoIP telephony systems and network infrastructure in a mission-critical environment. - Experience administering and maintaining recording systems. - Emergency Number Professional (ENP) and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. - Bachelor's degree or higher in information technology, computer science, telecommunications, network engineering, or a closely related field. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must possess a valid driver's license. - Must pass a post-conditional offer comprehensive background investigation, including psychological and polygraph assessments. - Work schedule is generally 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday during business hours, with some telework and flexible scheduling options. - May be required to work outside normal hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, due to system degradation, operational needs, inclement weather, or large-scale incidents. - Eligible for additional straight-time compensation in cases of operational need.
