About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE Prince William County’s Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Division, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Superintendent for the County’s Municipal Sanitary Landfill in Manassas, Virginia. This position oversees daily landfilling operations, supervises personnel to achieve operational objectives, and ensures regulatory compliance. The role also plays a key part in project coordination, equipment procurement, and safety programs, serving as the responsible authority for the facility when the Landfill Superintendent is unavailable. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Oversee daily operations of active and closed sanitary landfill areas in conformance with regulations, permits, engineering drawings, and established standards. - Directly supervise up to 12 employees, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and mentoring staff. - Ensure proper maintenance of environmental control systems related to air, landfill gas, groundwater, stormwater, leachate, and sediment and erosion control. - Assist in coordinating the maintenance, repair, and replacement of facilities, vehicles, and equipment. - Routinely interact with County staff, vendors, businesses, and the general public to handle complex inquiries and resolve issues. - Analyze operational data and employee workflows to enhance efficiency, safety, and customer service through continuous improvement initiatives. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - High school diploma or GED is required. - Minimum five (5) years of full-time related experience in active solid waste landfilling operations or construction site development. - Preferred: Minimum three (3) years of full-time supervisory experience directing and evaluating 10 or more employees in an operational environment. - Preferred: Minimum three (3) years of work experience dealing directly with the public in a customer service setting. - Preferred: Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must possess a current Virginia DPOR Class II Waste Management Facility Operator License or obtain it within eight (8) months of hire. - Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and be able to drive a County vehicle. - Designated as an essential employee; must respond to emergencies, inclement weather, and operational issues before or after regular hours, including weekends and holidays. - Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, safety vest, and hard hat. - Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly. Work is performed in inside and outside environments with exposure to vibrations, noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, dust, and inadequate lighting. Requires walking long distances over rough terrain, climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping. - Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination.
