Departmental Safety Coordinator

ABOUT THE ROLE The Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) Departmental Safety Coordinator is primarily responsible for developing, evaluating, and implementing departmental safety policies and procedures. This position provides safety program leadership, oversees emergency preparedness, ensures regulatory compliance, conducts risk assessments and hazard identification, develops and delivers safety training, provides field safety oversight, and maintains standard operating procedures. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of an HR Manager, Assistant, or Deputy Director. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Lead emergency response planning, severe weather preparedness, continuity of operations, and post-incident recovery activities - Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety requirements and monitor regulatory changes - Conduct job hazard analyses, workplace inspections, and field observations to identify risks and recommend corrective actions - Lead investigations of employee injuries, vehicle accidents, equipment damage, near misses, and environmental incidents - Develop and deliver required safety training, orientation programs, toolbox talks, and leadership training - Develop, implement, and continuously improve the department-wide occupational safety program - Partner with managers and supervisors to build ownership of safety at every level and promote proactive hazard identification - Conduct routine field visits to construction sites, maintenance operations, fleet facilities, wastewater and stormwater operations, solid waste activities, and emergency response operations - Support safe operation of commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized machinery through inspections and training - Liaise with the Risk Management Division for liability, worker's compensation claims, CDL medical exams, and random drug and alcohol tests - Maintain and customize the web-based software platform for safety training, inspection, accident records, and OSHA logs - Serve as an advisor to the department employee safety round table MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree and three years of experience with industrial health and safety and loss control practices - Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Preferred qualifications include extensive knowledge of occupational safety regulations and best practices in public works, transportation, construction, and environmental services - Must be a collaborative, analytical, and solutions-oriented professional capable of leading through influence and building strong relationships across the organization - Ability to conduct routine field visits to diverse and potentially hazardous operational sites SELECTION PROCESS - The City of Alexandria is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity in its workforce - All qualified candidates will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, family responsibilities, matriculation, political affiliation, genetic information, military status, or disability HOW TO APPLY - Submit an application through the official City of Alexandria employment channels - For inquiries, contact the employer at City Hall, 421 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia, 22314 EMPLOYMENT DETAILS - Status: Full-Time - Location: Alexandria, VA - Department: Transportation & Environmental Services, Administration Division - Opening Date: July 20, 2026 - Closing Date: Continuous - Bargaining Unit: N/A
