About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is an unclassified, full-time position in the Fulton County Sheriff's Office. The Fire Safety Officer oversees all fire- and life-safety programs within detention facilities, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local fire codes, NFPA standards, and detention-facility regulations. The role serves as the subject-matter expert on fire prevention, fire-protection systems, and emergency preparedness in a secure, high-risk environment. It also involves coordinating special projects, conducting operational research, and assisting in management without direct supervisory responsibilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct routine inspections of inmate housing, kitchens, workshops, medical areas, and administrative offices to identify and mitigate fire hazards
- Develop, maintain, and enforce fire safety and emergency evacuation plans
- Coordinate and conduct fire drills for staff and inmates in accordance with correctional standards
- Train staff and inmates on fire extinguisher use, evacuation procedures, and emergency communication protocols
- Inspect, test, and maintain fire alarms, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and suppression systems
- Ensure compliance with NFPA standards, state fire codes, OSHA requirements, and correctional facility regulations
- Prepare reports for internal audits, accreditation reviews, and inspections by the state fire marshal
- Serve as the primary liaison with local fire departments and emergency response agencies
- Coordinate fire safety procedures with custody operations to ensure inmate accountability and security during emergencies
- Conduct operational research, productivity analyses, and management studies to assist departmental operations
- Coordinate special projects, oversee professional contractors, and administer grants for state and federally funded programs
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in fire science, public safety, engineering, or a related field
- 5 years of experience in fire inspection, fire protection systems, or life-safety compliance
- Strong knowledge of NFPA codes, fire-protection technology, and emergency-response procedures
- Ability to pass all background checks and work effectively in a secure facility
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Professional certifications strongly preferred: Fire Inspector I/II, Fire Instructor I, Firefighter I/II, or fire alarm, sprinkler, or life-safety systems certifications
- Experience in detention, corrections, industrial, or high-risk environments is preferred
- Must agree to and successfully pass a background investigation, drug screening, and polygraph examination
