About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Las Vegas invites applications for a Budget Analyst to lead, coordinate, and participate in the development, administration, and monitoring of a large and complex department budget within the Department of Public Safety. The role involves preparing financial and management research, analyzing special projects, and performing technical tasks. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in financial and governmental accounting, budget development, forecasting, advanced Excel skills, and proven leadership and supervisory experience to foster a culture of accuracy, collaboration, and accountability. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Coordinate, forecast, research, and prepare the department's annual budget submission and analyze prior year expenditures. - Authorize and monitor expenditures based on funding availability and prepare periodic status reports. - Provide complex financial and management research and analysis for special projects and funding initiatives. - Provide direct staffing assistance to the department director and managers regarding financial and service delivery reporting. - Collaborate with department and Finance staff to resolve purchasing issues. - Prepare periodic and special reports for the City Manager's Office. - Develop and utilize complex spreadsheets and databases to track and analyze financial information. - Participate in budget preparation for contracting services, including contract development, negotiation, and performance monitoring. - When assigned to specific divisions (Detention & Enforcement or Municipal Court): supervise daily accounting and budgeting operations, audit and reconcile accounts, coordinate purchasing, and oversee financial matters relative to department systems and goals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting, finance, budgeting, financial analysis, or a closely related field, preferably in a government agency. - Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree with a major in finance, accounting, business, public administration, economics, or a related field. - Knowledge and Skills: Advanced budget preparation, generally accepted accounting principles, governmental budgeting practices, financial analysis and reporting, Oracle Financials module, financial forecasting, advanced spreadsheet and database software, budget control principles, and pertinent federal, state, and local laws. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must pass a pre-employment drug test and complete background check. - Additional screening for the Department of Public Safety includes a background investigation and polygraph. - Sensitive and confidential aspects of personal life will be explored during the screening phase. - Some positions may require a psychological suitability assessment.
