ABOUT THE ROLE The Denver Sheriff Department (DSD), the largest sheriff department in Colorado, is seeking qualified applicants for the December 2026 Training Academy. DSD is responsible for diverse public safety functions, including operating two detention facilities, providing court security, managing transportation and extradition of persons in custody, operating specialized units (Fugitive Apprehension, K-9), managing the Vehicle Impound Facility, and providing security at Denver Health Medical Center. The mission is to provide safe and secure custody with professionalism, compassion, and a focus on serving the community. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays - Maintain the custody, safety, and care of persons in custody across multiple environments - Conduct searches for contraband, inspect for safety hazards, and monitor behavior - Transport persons in custody between detention centers, courts, and medical facilities - Conduct intake and booking processes, reviewing charges and legal status for proper classification - Inventory and maintain accountability of inmate property and departmental equipment - Calculate release dates, communicate policies, and prepare required documentation - Respond to and investigate incidents, preserve scenes, maintain chain of custody, and testify in court - Meet certification standards in firearms and tactical weapons and participate in ongoing training - Serve in specialized or administrative roles as needed (e.g., dispatch, training, gang intelligence) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate. 2. Experience: None required for entry-level. 3. Age and Licensing: Must be 21 years of age by the start of the academy and possess a valid Driver's License at the time of application. 4. Physical Standards: Must meet the certified physical fitness standards adopted by the Department. 5. Lateral Deputy Sheriff Requirements (if applicable): Currently employed by a law enforcement agency or separated as a peace officer for one year or less with a minimum of three years of experience, no pending internal affairs investigation, and no sustained discipline in the last three years. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Training: Must successfully complete a 16 to 18-week Recruit Training Academy covering physical fitness, defensive tactics, custody management, firearms, emergency driving, report writing, and scenario-based training. - Work Authorization: Must have valid work authorization that does not require visa sponsorship. - Redeployment: May be re-deployed to support core city functions during a citywide emergency. - AI Policy: Use of AI for resume writing or interview practice is allowed if honest; falsifying qualifications or using AI during interviews will result in disqualification.
