About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Detroit Law Department represents Detroit in all civil actions, defending the treasury of the city. This role offers the opportunity to conduct high-stakes civil rights jury trials in federal court, defend the City in high-exposure wrongful death motor vehicle lawsuits, expose financial fraud in no-fault cases, prosecute lawsuits against derelict commercial property owners, and litigate complex commercial and public policy matters. The department prides itself on being a diverse law firm with a relaxed, collegial work environment and a flexible hybrid work schedule. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Defend the City of Detroit and its employees in civil rights police misconduct, motor vehicle negligence, motor vehicle no-fault, breach of contract, and municipal litigation - Handle a caseload and work as lead attorney under supervision - Conduct jury and bench trials - Participate in arbitrations, facilitation, and mediations - Conduct depositions and motions hearings - Manage investigation and discovery processes MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Education: Juris Doctorate Degree from an American Bar Association-approved institution. 2. Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the specified litigation specialties. 3. Preferred Experience: Tort litigation and governmental immunity experience. 4. Skills: Excellent legal writing, verbal communications, analytical, and oral advocacy skills. 5. References: Outstanding references from former employers. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must possess a valid license to practice law in the State of Michigan. - Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis. - Applicants must attach a cover letter, resume with references, and a writing sample to their application. SELECTION PROCESS - Evaluation of Training, Experience, and Personal Qualifications: 30 percent - Interview: 70 percent - Total Evaluation Score: 100 percent - Additional points may be awarded for Veteran Points (0 to 15 points) and Detroit Residency Credit (15 points).
