About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The San Francisco District Attorney's Office collaborates with diverse communities and law enforcement agencies to make San Francisco one of the safest cities in America. Assistant District Attorneys assume significant responsibility early in their careers, typically beginning in the Criminal Division and managing a wide range of cases. As they gain experience, they handle increasingly serious matters. The Department welcomes both entry-level and lateral/experienced attorneys for placement across Criminal Division units, including Misdemeanors, Preliminary Hearings, General Felonies, Intake, Juvenile, Homicide, Child Abuse & Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Major Crimes, Alternative/Collaborative Courts, and Vulnerable Victims. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Tries jury and bench criminal cases and litigates evidentiary and other hearings in the San Francisco Superior Court. - Represents the People of the State of California in court appearances, written petitions, motions, appeals, and other court documents. - Exercises fair and ethical prosecution practices, respecting the humanity and dignity of everyone involved in a criminal case. - Interviews witnesses, conducts or supervises investigations, and writes legal briefs for assigned cases and trials. - Prepares daily court calendars and maintains records of warrants and citations issued. - Maintains files, records work product status, files memos on case dispositions, runs law enforcement database checks, and transports files to court. - Receives and investigates complaints from the public and police to determine the necessity for citations or warrants. - Researches legal issues related to the prosecution of criminal cases. - Represents the District Attorney to other law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Membership in the CA State Bar Association and license to practice in all state courts. - Comprehensive knowledge of state, federal, and municipal codes, laws, and ordinances, particularly civil and criminal laws, courtroom and jury trial work, and administrative techniques. - Ability to speak and write effectively in the preparation and presentation of legal cases. - Ability to exercise considerable judgment and tact when dealing with court officials, juries, law enforcement, and other governmental agencies. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Ability to work in a high-stress environment and handle complex, challenging cases. - Commitment to working effectively with people of diverse backgrounds to reflect the community served.
