About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
- Responsible for the evaluation, design, implementation, and interconnection of the City's computer network.
- Includes planning, designing, and maintaining network security, and writing code to solve software problems and ensure all software is up to date.
- Duties are more complex than a Network Engineer II, requiring a higher level of responsibility, with the incumbent potentially acting as a lead worker.
- General supervision is received from administrative personnel, with related work performed as required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide technical assistance and equipment repair to network users at multiple locations.
- Assist with the development of system standards and training.
- Maintain complete and current network documentation.
- Monitor and maintain the performance and functioning of hardware, software, LAN, and WAN networks.
- Coordinate and solve issues pertaining to user accounts, permissions, e-mail addresses, and anti-virus/spam.
- Manage and maintain all wireless equipment and associated systems.
- Implement and manage hardware and software systems transmitting information through voice, data, and video.
- Work with vendors to install new applications and hardware.
- Install and set up server operating systems.
- Develop and implement procedures for the installation, use, and troubleshooting of networks, hardware, and software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must meet one of the following options:
- Option A: Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college/university with at least 15 credit hours in computer science courses, plus 4 years of experience in the design, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of computer networks.
- Option B: Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college/university with at least 15 credit hours in computer science courses, plus 6 years of relevant experience.
- Option C: High School graduation or High School Equivalency Diploma, plus 8 years of relevant experience.
- Option D: An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience within the limits of Options A through C.
- Promotional candidates: One year of permanent competitive status currently holding the position of Network Engineer II.
- Note: Degrees from outside the US require independent verification of equivalency from an approved agency.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a Class D Driver's License valid in the State of New York.
- Residency requirement is waived.
SELECTION PROCESS
- Continuous Examination Program.
- Rated Evaluation of Training and Experience (T&E): Applicants must complete a questionnaire detailing IT education, training courses, certifications, and experience.
- Applicants must briefly describe a significant achievement in each job area and provide verifiable reference contact information.
- Experience will be rated specifically on Network Administration and Data communications.
