About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The City of Topeka's Public Works Engineering department is seeking a licensed professional engineer to serve as its Traffic Engineer. This position manages safe and efficient traffic flow movement within the city and supports the department's commitment to enhancing residents' quality of life through the effective management of public infrastructure and services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate with contractors, developers, City staff, and outside agencies regarding traffic disruptions, studies, and management.
- Review and approve traffic control, detour, and pavement marking plans.
- Manage the full lifecycle of traffic projects, including plan preparation, budgeting, and inspection.
- Respond to inquiries from citizens.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Kansas (must obtain a Kansas license within six months if licensed in another state).
- Five years of engineering experience after obtaining the PE license, with at least two years as a project manager and supervisor.
- Three to five years of engineering experience in traffic operations, including planning, design, construction, and operations.
- Valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification is preferred.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to analyze complex problems and make sound decisions.
- Excellent communicator and confident presenter.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Knowledgeable of traffic engineering principles, practices, and procedures.
- Eligible for the Choose Topeka Incentive Program.
