About This Position
About The Role
The Seattle Animal Shelter is seeking a compassionate Veterinarian to join the Veterinary Services team. This role supports the spay and neuter clinic and the shelter medicine program, providing high-quality, low-cost services and upholding high medical standards for shelter animals. The position focuses on serving the community, respecting the human/animal bond, and providing access to quality veterinary care through monthly vaccine clinics and community outreach.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform spay, neuter, and other surgical procedures.
- Provide preventative treatments for infections, disease control, parasite diagnosis, and dietary evaluations.
- Examine and evaluate animals, performing medical procedures including vaccinations, prescribing medications, and conducting lab work.
- Maintain medical records and drug-use logs while assisting in developing medical policies and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to all state and federal laws, veterinary practice standards, and drug control regulations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols and surgical procedures.
- Perform or assist with euthanasia according to established protocols.
- Conduct examinations and testify in criminal cases when required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM).
- Current Washington State Veterinary License.
- Valid Washington Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation.
- Ability to obtain a DEA license.
Special Requirements
- Knowledge and experience with animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion animal health issues in a shelter setting.
- Knowledge of City, County, State, and Federal animal health laws.
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic veterinary medical records.
- Experience using PetPoint, ClinicHQ, and Petriage computer programs.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance and exert moderate physical effort.
- Tolerance for exposure to zoonotic diseases, fractious animals, high noise levels, and hazardous chemicals.
- Availability to provide after-hours medical consultations via phone.
Selection Process
