About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) leverages technology to drive opportunity, improve public safety, and help the government run better across New York City. The successful candidate will serve as a Principal Automation Engineer for the Infrastructure Management division. This role provides Site Reliability Engineering support to all current and new automation services, writes and maintains infrastructure code, acts as the highest point of technical escalation, leads design sessions, and manages the work of DevOps Engineers. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Provide Site Reliability Engineering support for automation services, ensuring reliability, performance, and uptime targets are met. - Write, update, and maintain infrastructure and automation code, including CI/CD pipelines, IaC modules, and monitoring/alerting scripts. - Serve as the highest point of escalation for production incidents, lead root cause analysis, and drive resolution for complex platform issues. - Lead design sessions for new services, cluster expansions, and platform improvements to align architecture with scalability and security requirements. - Plan and prioritize own workload while managing, coordinating, and reviewing the work of other DevOps Engineers to meet delivery timelines. - Act as the technical owner for production environments, enforcing standards, documentation, and operational best practices across the team. - Handle special projects and initiatives as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Master's degree in computer science and 3 years of progressively responsible IT experience (including 18 months in a managerial or supervisory capacity). 2. Bachelor's degree and 4 years of the same IT experience. 3. High school diploma or equivalent and 6 years of the same IT experience. 4. Satisfactory combination of education and experience with at least a high school diploma and 3 years of IT experience (including 18 months in a managerial/supervisory capacity). 5. Undergraduate credits may substitute up to 2 years of IT experience. Graduate credits may substitute up to 1 year. Neither can substitute for the 18 months of managerial/supervisory experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Preferred skills include 10+ years of experience in DevOps platform engineering or a related field. - Expertise in infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using Terraform, AWS, Azure, or GCP, and Kubernetes containerization. - Familiarity with Jfrog Artifactory, ELK Stack, OpenShift, Ansible Automation Platform, Azure Kubernetes service, Kafka, NSX-T, and VMware vSphere. - Open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program.
