Trial Attorney

ABOUT THE ROLE Located in the Public Safety Division within the Domestic Violence & Special Victims Section (DVSV) at the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) for the District of Columbia. This role primarily involves representing Adult Protective Services (APS) in obtaining guardians and conservators for vulnerable adults who are being abused, neglected, or exploited. The attorney will work closely with APS social workers and serve as the primary attorney for these responsibilities, with backup support from colleagues. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Represent APS in obtaining guardians and conservators for vulnerable adults - Work closely with APS social workers, who act as petitioners in intervention cases - Advise social workers, investigate allegations, and file intervention petitions - Conduct research and discovery, negotiate settlements, engage in motions practice, and manage trial practice - File civil protection orders on behalf of incapacitated seniors or vulnerable adults in the name of the District of Columbia - Assist in the section's other practice areas as back-up support - Represent OAG at various meetings focused on coordinating services for elder victims MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - At least three (3) to seven (7) years of relevant, related specialized experience - Substantive knowledge of District and federal law - Excellent oral and written communication skills - Outstanding legal research skills - Organized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment - Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain working relationships with stakeholders at all levels SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must be an active member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar, or have the ability to waive in and be admitted within 360 days of appointment - Subject to a background investigation, including reference checks - Applicants claiming Residency Preference must maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years - In-person reporting is required, with limited telework and flexible work schedules available upon eligibility SELECTION PROCESS - Applications will be evaluated based on the completeness of the submission and required attachments - Selected candidates will be subject to a general suitability screening, including a background investigation and reference checks - The District of Columbia Government is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected status HOW TO APPLY - Complete the online application in its entirety - Submit the following required attachments (failure to submit all will eliminate consideration): 1.
