About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Network Engineer is responsible for safeguarding and optimizing the City of Baltimore’s enterprise network by proactively identifying, mitigating, and preventing security vulnerabilities across critical infrastructure. This role combines deep expertise in enterprise routing, switching, and firewall administration with hands-on data center management, wireless infrastructure support, and network automation to protect City systems and maintain high availability. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Manage Cisco ASA and Palo Alto firewall environments. - Administer Cisco ACI fabric architectures. - Support network monitoring tools and ensure compliance with industry security standards. - Install, repair, and troubleshoot network programs, hardware, and systems. - Schedule and perform preventative and corrective maintenance procedures and repairs. - Analyze, apply logic, and solve complex technology problems. - Write detailed technical reports and analyses. - Develop systems software and systems software testing procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university. 2. Two years of related specialty IT experience (e.g., system engineering, network engineering, information security, application programming, systems design, database management, GIS, custom report writing, or cloud-based software integration). 3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. (Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. Advanced technical credentials may substitute for six months of experience or education.) SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must successfully complete a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprinting, as this is a position of trust. - Must complete a mandatory six-month probation period. - Must complete a Financial Disclosure pursuant to Sections 7-7, 7-8, and 7-9 of the City Ethics Law. - Education credentials obtained outside the US must be evaluated for US equivalency by an approved agency (e.g., www.naces.org). - Preferred qualifications include previous IT work lead experience, government IT experience, and advanced technical credentials (e.g., PMP, CISM). SELECTION PROCESS 1. Application review: Candidates indicating minimum qualifications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. Training and experience will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. 2. Supplemental questions may be required to further examine specific knowledge, skills, and abilities. 3. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months (candidates are not listed in rank order). 4. Final consideration requires authorization for the release of criminal conviction information.
