About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
New Hanover County Fire Rescue is seeking an experienced Fire Protective Services professional with strong leadership, incident management, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Assigned to the Professional Services Division, this role involves coordinating and monitoring training, creating training content, managing department training programs, onboarding, processing training requests, and completing special projects. The Captain may be reassigned to any division based on current staffing needs. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with availability required during emergency situations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinates and instructs training to shift personnel.
- Manages department training programs, including certification programs, development training, continuing education, and onboarding for all personnel.
- Serves as a program lead to collect, analyze, and report program data, making recommendations based on findings.
- Participates in quarterly and annual presentations of program data and trends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent, and six (6) years of related fire service experience or five (5) years of firefighting experience with New Hanover County Fire Services; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid North Carolina Driver License with a good driving record (required by first date of employment).
- North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
- Firefighter or Firefighter II accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard (NFPA 1001).
- Driver Operator Aerial accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Driver Operator Pumps accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Technical Rescuer Rope Rescue Technician or equivalent Technical Rescuer accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Technical Rescuer Common Passenger Vehicle Technician or equivalent Technical Rescuer accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Fire Officer 1 accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Fire Instructor 1 accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Fire Instructor 2 accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Within 1 year of employment: North Carolina Delivery Agency Proctor Qualification.
- Within 2 years of employment: Fire Officer 2 and Fire Instructor 3 accredited certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Within 3 years of employment: Instructor qualification in one (1) area.
- Preferred certifications: NC Delivery Agency Proctor Qualification, Center for Public Safety Excellence Fire Officer designation.
SELECTION PROCESS
- Applications are screened by the Human Resources Department.
- Referred candidates receive a Candidate Assessment Process Packet via email detailing next steps.
- Selected candidates participate in the Candidate Assessment Selection Process, which may include:
1. Fire Team Promote Testing System
2. Panel Interview
3. Written assignment and/or Oral Presentation
4. Physical Agility Assessment (External candidates only)
