About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Join a progressive, proactive Fire/EMS department that is family-friendly and employee-first. This role involves leading a talented group of full-time Firefighter-EMTs and Paramedics to provide emergency medical care, risk reduction initiatives, and critical incident response. The Battalion Chief is responsible for proactively leading daily operations, strategic coordination, and supervisory oversight of fire suppression, EMS, training, and community risk reduction, championing exceptional service delivery and strengthening community relationships.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to emergencies and perform duties in alignment with department and industry standards, including EMS, fire suppression, rescue, investigation, prevention, education, and command functions
- Assume Incident Command at emergency scenes, managing personnel and resources to ensure life safety, property conservation, and incident stabilization
- Coordinate fire department operations with internal city departments and external jurisdictions
- Supervise personnel during emergency and non-emergency operations, ensuring alignment with guidelines, standards, and staffing levels
- Schedule personnel, authorize overtime to meet shift minimums, and lead post-incident reviews and After-Action discussions
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints; investigate concerns and recommend corrective action
- Manage records within the department's Records Management System (RMS), ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance
- Provide strategic leadership to align department operations with organizational values, mission, and goals
- Oversee training programs, performance standards, safety practices, and department quality assurance initiatives
- Participate in budget preparation and fiscal management; authorize expenditures in accordance with budget guidelines
- Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, disciplinary investigations, and prepare documentation consistent with department standards
- Enforce city and department policies, rules, and labor agreements while promoting a positive workplace culture
- Represent the department on committees, task forces, and public engagements
- Serve as liaison for joint operations, planning efforts, and cooperative service delivery
- Perform Public Information Officer (PIO) duties when requested to support media relations and public communication
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in fire science, public administration, or a related field (or ability to obtain within 30 months from hire date)
- Current State of Minnesota Firefighter License (or ability to obtain prior to date of hire, and must maintain thereafter)
- Current certification as a Paramedic in the State of Minnesota
- Five years of work experience as a full-time Firefighter
- Three years of previous experience in a leadership position
- Certified Emergency Manager by the State of Minnesota within three years of hire
- Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver's license or equivalent out-of-state license
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Physical agility requirements including climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and scaffolds while maintaining balance (heights of 25 feet common, occasionally over 75 feet)
- Frequent physical exertion up to 100 pounds or more
- Work in and around fire, smoke, loud noises, temperature extremes, fumes, and periodic exposure to hazardous chemicals, vibrations, and infectious diseases
- Preferred qualifications include a Master's Degree, Commission on Professional Credentialing certification, National Fire Academy studies in leadership and management, and fluency in a second language spoken in Maplewood (e.g., Hmong, Spanish, Karen)
