About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a highly responsible law enforcement management position serving as the commander of a major division within the Police Department. Working under the direction of the Bureau Captain, the Police Commander manages the daily activities of the division, directing and overseeing both sworn law enforcement officers and civilian technical and clerical staff. The role requires strong leadership to develop and implement department goals, manage complex criminal investigations, handle personnel issues, and ensure the delivery of quality customer service to the public and City departments. The Commander may also act as the Chief of Police in their absence and represents management in collective bargaining negotiations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, and monitor division goals, objectives, and policies
- Supervise, motivate, and evaluate the work of assigned sworn and civilian staff
- Participate in hiring, firing, assignments, promotions, and disciplinary actions
- Supervise and coordinate major criminal investigations and review investigation reports
- Assist the Captain in preparing the department budget
- Analyze emergency situations and formulate appropriate response plans
- Review and approve special event permits and implement safety protocols
- Represent management in Collective Bargaining negotiations and informal grievance hearings
- Act as the Chief of Police in their absence, as directed
- Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and department core values
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, law enforcement, police administration, or a related field
- Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience, with at least five (5) years of progressive supervisory experience (Reserve Status does not count)
- A comparable amount of relevant training, education, and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire
- Must meet all minimum requirements for a police officer per Florida Statute 943 and hold State of Florida police officer certification
- Must pass the Department's physical test and minimum requirements outlined in the Florida Standards and Training Guidelines
- Subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular hours and relocation to challenging conditions
- Physical requirements include frequent exertion up to 20 pounds, occasional exertion up to 50 pounds, constant wearing of 15 to 20 pounds of equipment, and the ability to run, climb, and operate police vehicles and equipment
