About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Wheat Ridge is seeking an Aqua Fitness Instructor for a part-time position at the Recreation Center and/or Anderson Pool. This role involves developing and teaching aquatic fitness classes, ensuring participant safety, and fostering a positive, collaborative environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Develop and teach class content appropriate to the course description and intensity level - Provide feedback to class participants and proper instruction in the use of support materials - Monitor participants and remain attentive and alert while instructing - Provide a safe environment for all participants and enforce general building policies - Complete necessary reports and forms as requested - Attend scheduled meetings as required - Prepare for program activities, including lesson plans and organizing relevant equipment - Set up and break down materials and space used for instruction - Find a dependable and appropriate substitute upon absence MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional Certification or equivalent - Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (required within 60 days of hire) - Thorough knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, and teaching methods in a recreational environment - Working knowledge of rules, strategies, skills, and organizational procedures associated with aquatics - General knowledge of human anatomy - Public relations skills and ability to communicate effectively - Demonstrated skill in operating necessary equipment - Ability to plan, organize, instruct, and supervise assigned programs - Ability to control and lead large groups of people - Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and remain current on industry trends - Ability to analyze situations quickly, determine proper courses of action, and correct facility safety hazards - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a high level of autonomy - Previous instructional experience preferred SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Ability to work in a hot, wet, humid environment with chemical smells - Ability to work at an outdoor facility during summer months with exposure to all types of weather - Strength and stamina necessary to rescue distressed swimmers - Ability to work extended periods of hearing and speaking in chemically treated water - Ability to work in environments with poor acoustics and distractions (e.g., music, weather conditions) - Physical ability to climb, frequently sit, stand, stoop, or walk - Ability to lift objects frequently under 25 lbs and occasionally up to or over 50 lbs - Capacity for considerable muscular exertion, physical strain, and continuous intense mental concentration and visual attention SELECTION PROCESS - Review of application, qualifications, certifications, and relevant instructional experience HOW TO APPLY - Submit an application through the City of Wheat Ridge official careers portal or Human Resources Office - For reasonable accommodation requests during the application process, contact the Human Resources Office EMPLOYMENT DETAILS - Job Type: Part-Time (hours vary according to class needs) - Location: City of Wheat Ridge Recreation Center and/or Anderson Pool, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 - Work Environment: Indoor aquatic facility and potential outdoor summer facilities; involves working in chemically treated water with varying weather conditions and acoustics - Equal Opportunity Employer: The City of Wheat Ridge celebrates diversity and inclusivity and does not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, disability status, marital status, or any other applicable protected characteristics.
