Private Swim Instructor

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Wheat Ridge is seeking a Private Swim Instructor to provide safe and quality swim lesson instruction for various age groups and abilities in a one-on-one or small group setting. Wheat Ridge is a home-rule city offering a central location with easy access to Denver and the Rocky Mountains. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Teach class content appropriate to the swimmer level and within certification guidelines - Monitor participants and assess their skills - Provide a safe environment for all participants - Complete necessary reports and forms, including course records, attendance, progress reports, and lesson plans - Coordinate class times and prepare private and semi-private swim lessons directly with clients - Keep accurate receipts for lessons taught and submit them to the program Coordinator - Communicate professionally with clients using verbal and written methods - Perform related work as required and assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - At least 16 years of age - Ability to instruct individuals and small groups, follow instructions, and communicate effectively - Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine proper courses of action - Ability to analyze and correct facility safety hazards, write reports, and adhere to emergency procedures - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public - Comfortable working with a high level of autonomy - Thorough knowledge of teaching methods and techniques that provide positive motivation in a recreational environment - Working knowledge of rules, strategies, and organizational procedures associated with aquatics departments - General knowledge of human anatomy - Ability to proficiently perform various swim strokes for 25 yards - Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) Swim Lesson Instructor certification (preferred) or other nationally accredited certification required (SAI certification provided for selected candidates) - Previous instructional experience preferred SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must be able to work in a hot, wet, and humid environment with chemical smells, and outdoors in all weather types during summer months - Requires strength and stamina necessary to rescue distressed swimmers - Requires extended periods of hearing and speaking, and working in chemically treated water - Requires ability to frequently lift objects less than 25 lbs and occasionally up to and over 50 lbs - Requires considerable muscular exertion, physical strain, and continuous intense mental concentration and visual attention SELECTION PROCESS - Applications are reviewed based on submitted qualifications, certifications, and relevant experience - Candidates must meet all physical, environmental, and certification requirements prior to hiring HOW TO APPLY - Submit an application through the City of Wheat Ridge official employment portal or Human Resources Office - Requests for reasonable accommodations during the application or employment process can be directed to the Human Resources Office EMPLOYMENT DETAILS - Position Type: Seasonal, Entry Level, Part-Time - Job Shift: Any (hours vary according to scheduling needs) - Location: Rec Center and Anderson Building, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 - Equal Opportunity Employer: The City of Wheat Ridge does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, gender, age, national origin, disability, or any other status protected by law, and will consider reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants.
