About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Delaware State Police is currently accepting applications for the 108th Recruit Class, with a potential hire date in the Spring of 2027. The mission is to enhance the quality of life for all Delaware citizens and visitors by providing professional, competent, and compassionate law enforcement services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform patrol duties including directing traffic, assisting motorists, making arrests, and controlling crowds.
- Conduct investigative duties such as interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, handling crime scenes, and executing warrants.
- Execute troop duties like sending and receiving radio messages, maintaining records, and preparing written reports.
- Maintain good personal appearance and physical condition, passing regular fitness tests throughout the career.
- Participate in varied assignments including testifying in court, securing disaster areas, community relations, and training recruits.
- Work 12-hour rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime, often in physically demanding or hazardous conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen.
- Age: Must reach 21st birthday prior to academy completion and not be older than 39 on the first day of the Academy.
- Education: High school diploma or GED, plus a minimum of 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited college or university, OR 30 college credits along with two years of active-duty military service.
- Driver's License: Current valid driver's license with at least one year of driving experience.
- Criminal Record: No felony convictions. All prior criminal arrests must be expunged before being hired.
- Drug Usage: No prior use of hallucinogenic drugs. Other drug use is subject to review.
- Physical Standards: Weight must comply with the Delaware State Police weight chart or maximum allowed body fat percentage. Normal hearing and specific visual acuity standards (correctable to 20/20) are required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Residency: Delaware residency is required by the completion of the academy training, prior to field training.
- Training Academy: Must reside full-time at the training facility in Dover for approximately 22 weeks, followed by 12 weeks of field training.
- Must be willing and able to receive oleoresin capsicum (O.C.) spray and incapacitation from an electronic control device (Taser) during training.
- Must obtain a Delaware driver's license prior to field training assignment.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
- Employment Type: Full-Time
- Work Location: Dover, DE (Academy), followed by assignment to various troop locations statewide.
- Schedule: 12-hour rotating shifts, working a maximum of 3 consecutive days, with standby status options for court.
