About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Under general supervision, this role receives, evaluates, prioritizes, and relays 9-1-1, emergency, and non-emergency calls for service for the cities of Antioch and Brentwood, as well as Antioch Animal Control. The dispatcher operates telecommunications equipment, inputs calls into computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, and coordinates the response of emergency personnel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive, classify, and prioritize incoming 9-1-1, emergency, and non-emergency calls
- Evaluate response needs and dispatch personnel in accordance with established policies
- Maintain contact with field units and monitor multiple radio frequencies
- Retrieve and relay information from local, state, and national computer networks regarding wanted persons, stolen property, and warrants
- Operate specialized public safety computer systems including RMS, CJIS, and NCIC
- Notify and dispatch Public Works staff and Animal Control Officers for after-hours call outs
- Monitor County Warning Systems and implement Amber Alerts and Code 666s
- Monitor security cameras and doors inside and surrounding the Police Department
- Testify in court and perform related clerical and dispatch duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Entry Level Candidates:
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Ability to obtain P.O.S.T. certification in Basic Police Dispatch within 12 months of completing probation
- Some experience in a law enforcement agency as a public safety dispatcher using CAD is desirable
Lateral Candidates:
- High school graduation or equivalent, supplemented by successful completion of the basic Dispatcher course
- Two (2) years of experience as a public safety dispatcher utilizing a CAD system
- Possession of P.O.S.T. certification in Basic Police Dispatch
All Candidates:
- Valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
- Typing certificate validated within the last 12 months showing at least 45 net words per minute (must be a 5-minute timed exercise showing errors, gross wpm, and net wpm; no online certificates accepted)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- No felony convictions; misdemeanor convictions may result in applicant disqualification
- Must be able to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts, and may be called back or held over to maintain staffing
- Physical demands include sitting or standing for prolonged periods, repetitive hand movement for keyboard and headset use, and lifting light to moderate weight
- Must maintain composure, alertness, and concentration while working extended periods under pressure
SELECTION PROCESS
1. POST Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery OR National Testing Network (NTN) online exam
2. Oral Board Interviews (dates TBD)
3. Thorough background investigation and medical screening per POST Public Safety Dispatcher Candidate Selection Standards
