About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Full Time position with the City of Mesa Police Department (Job Number: 17471). This recruitment establishes eligible lists for Lateral In-State and Lateral Out-of-State officers. Lateral In-State officers are experienced Arizona peace officers not required to attend the Mesa Police Academy and are assigned to a Field Training Officer upon hire. Lateral Out-of-State officers are hired at the Police Officer Recruit starting salary while studying for and taking Arizona waiver exams, and will be promoted to Police Officer - Lateral upon successful completion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform general or specialized police work in the protection of life and property
- Interact with a culturally and socially diverse population and employ discretion in solving problems
- Maintain public order, prevent crime, and enforce laws and ordinances
- Conduct investigations, make arrests, issue summonses, citations, and warnings, and assist the public
- Perform routine patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic control duties on an assigned shift
- Respond to public safety calls for service
- May perform specialized assignments such as training recruits, traffic enforcement on motorcycle or bicycle, high-risk tactical operations, handling hazardous devices, working with K-9 units, conducting crime scene investigations, performing detailed follow-up investigations in the Criminal Investigations Division, maintaining complex criminal intelligence files, or conducting aerial surveillance
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduation or GED
- Police Officer - Lateral In-State: Must have completed an AZ P.O.S.T. academy and currently be, or have been, an AZPOST certified sworn peace officer in good standing
- Police Officer - Lateral Out-of-State: Must currently be, or have been, a certified sworn peace officer in good standing from another state or federal agency, must have graduated from a state-approved P.O.S.T. basic training academy, and have at least one year of experience as a P.O.S.T. academy certified peace officer
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must uphold the City's shared employee values of Knowledge, Respect, and Integrity
- Successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph is required
- Must meet the qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator by passing a medical evaluation in accordance with CFR 1910.134 by hire or promotion date
- Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date
- Candidates given a conditional job offer must pass a pre-employment medical physical, psychological test battery, and drug screening
- Commercial Motor Vehicle Assignment (if applicable): Must possess a valid Arizona Class A CDL or Commercial Learner's Permit with no air brake restriction, and obtain a Hazardous Materials Endorsement within 150 days of assignment. Subject to annual FMCSA CDL Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse queries and DOT drug and alcohol testing
