Special Agent - HAZARDOUS AGENT MITIGATION & MEDICAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (HAMMER)

ABOUT THE ROLE This position is with the U.S. Secret Service Special Operations Division. Special Agents perform dual missions of criminal investigations and protection. The HAMMER team specifically provides hazardous agent mitigation, emergency medical intervention, and extrication support. Agents respond to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats to locate, extract, decontaminate, and provide life-saving care to protectees. If an applicant cannot complete HAMMER selection school, they may remain in a non-tactical Special Agent role. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Conduct complex criminal investigations into financial crimes, counterfeiting, and cyber fraud - Provide physical protection for the President, Vice President, their families, and foreign dignitaries - Design and implement security measures for National Special Security Events (NSSEs) - Respond to hazardous, toxic, or lethal environments to mitigate CBRN threats - Perform emergency medical interventions and extrication of protectees - Utilize cutting-edge monitoring technology to survey immediate vicinity for threats - Coordinate with tactical elements, protective details, and medical units MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants are considered for GL-07, GL-09, or GS-11 levels based on education and experience: GL-07 Level Requirements (One of the following): - Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (3.0+ GPA, class standing, or honor society) - One full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) - One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL-5 (writing reports, gathering/analyzing information, meeting deadlines) - Combination of specialized experience and graduate education GL-09 Level Requirements (One of the following): - Master's degree or two full years of progressively higher graduate education - One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL-7 (law enforcement/protective techniques, problem-solving, leading teams) - Combination of specialized experience and graduate education beyond first year GS-11 Level Requirements (One of the following): - Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher graduate education - One year of specialized experience equivalent to GL-9 (complex criminal investigations, evidence analysis, arrests, searches, managing complex projects) - Combination of specialized experience and graduate education beyond two years Ideal candidates often possess military CBRN/CBRNE specialties, medical occupational specialties, or certifications as EMT, Paramedic, RN, PA, or MD. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen - Age: At least 21 years old at application; referral up to 40th birthday (exceptions for prior federal law enforcement) - Driver's License: Current valid REAL ID compliant license required - Vision: Uncorrected at least 20/100, correctable to 20/20 in each eye. LASIK/PRK/ALK/RK acceptable with specific waiting periods (3 months to 1 year) - Hearing: Must not exceed 25 decibels in either ear at 500, 1000, and 2000Hz ranges - Physical Fitness: Must pass Applicant Physical Abilities Test (APAT) including push-ups, sit-ups, agility run, and 1.5-mile run SELECTION PROCESS Evaluation includes review of resume and supporting documentation against minimum qualifications. The process involves two phases: Phase I: - National Crime Information Center (NCIC) check - Special Agent Entrance Exam (SAEE) - Applicant Physical Abilities Test (APAT) - Interview Phase II (for conditional offer recipients): - Credit Check - Security Interview - Polygraph examination - Drug screening - Medical examination - Background investigation for Top-Secret clearance Competencies evaluated include investigative methods, protective methods, law enforcement techniques, initiative, attention to detail, judgment, problem solving, data analysis, and leadership.
