About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE This is a public notice flyer for anticipated vacancies within the Department of the Navy, Commander, Navy Installations Command. The position is a developmental role to full performance GS-07, potentially filled at GS-05 or GS-06 with non-competitive promotion to GS-07. Firefighters will work to control and extinguish fires, rescue persons, reduce fire hazards, and respond to hazardous materials incidents. This is a Mission Essential position requiring readiness for continuity of operations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Control and extinguish fires and rescue persons endangered by fire. - Respond to fire and hazardous materials incidents; detect, identify, secure, and mitigate hazardous material spills. - Perform combat fires and rescue personnel on ships and vessels. - Suppress wildfires using heavy-duty vehicles/equipment and construct fire lines in hazardous conditions. - Initiate established medical protocols to provide basic life support. - Perform technical rescue functions including rope, vehicle/machinery, confined space, structural collapse, and wilderness rescue. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - U.S. Citizenship is required. - Specialized Experience Requirements by Grade: - GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06. Must demonstrate: controlling/extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations, detecting/reducing fire hazards, controlling HAZMAT incidents, driving/operating firefighting vehicles, and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures. - GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05. Must demonstrate: controlling/extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations, detecting/reducing fire hazards, controlling HAZMAT incidents, and performing basic/routine medical procedures. - GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04. Must demonstrate: controlling/extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations as a team member, and operating pumps/foam generators/similar equipment. - Certification Requirements (Must be awarded by DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board): - GS-07: Firefighter I & II, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NR-EMT). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Maximum Entry Age: Candidates must not have reached their 37th birthday by date of appointment (exceptions/waivers may apply). - Work Schedule: Rotating schedule including nights, weekends, holidays, mandatory overtime, and recall. - Physical Requirements: Must pass pre-appointment and periodic physical examinations (DoD 6055.06M). Must participate in medical surveillance programs. - Drug Testing: Pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) and random testing required. - Driver's License: Must obtain and maintain a current valid U.S. driver’s license. - Security Clearance: Secret clearance required. - Environmental Conditions: Exposure to harmful physical/chemical agents (fumes, dust, heat, radiation). Requires respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs. - Uniform: Required to wear uniform and personal protective/fire protection equipment. - Selective Service: Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered. - E-Verify: Must pass employment verification check.
