About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Department of the Navy, Commander, Navy Installations Command, is issuing a public notice for anticipated Firefighter vacancies in Key West, Florida. This position involves performing structural firefighting duties, operating firefighting equipment, and providing basic life support. The role requires participation in pre-fire planning, hazard assessment, and emergency response. This is a Mission Essential position requiring work on an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The work schedule is 144 hours biweekly. Veteran's preference does not apply under this specific hiring authority, though documentation is still required if claimed. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Perform structural firefighting duties for various facilities. - Participate in pre-fire planning by identifying new or existing hazards. - Operate a variety of firefighting equipment and vehicles. - Perform hazard and risk assessment techniques during initial incident analysis. - Initiate established medical protocols and provide basic life support. - Lift and move heavy objects as required. - Control hazardous materials incidents. - Perform rescue operations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be a U.S. Citizen. Qualifications vary by grade level: GS-05: - Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04, including controlling/extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations, and operating pumps/foam generators. - Certifications: Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Operations. Airport Firefighter certification required within one year of hire. Copies must be submitted with application. GS-06: - Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05, including controlling/extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations, detecting/reducing fire hazards, and controlling hazardous materials incidents. - Certifications: Firefighter I and II, CPR, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator Pumper. Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator ARFF, and NREMT required within one year of hire. Copies of current certifications must be submitted with application. GS-07: - Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06, including controlling/extinguishing fires, performing rescue operations, detecting/reducing fire hazards, controlling hazardous materials incidents, driving/operating firefighting vehicles, and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures. - Certifications: Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter (ARFF), HAZMAT Technician, NREMT and CPR, Driver Operator Pumper, and Driver Operator ARFF. Copies must be submitted with application. PREFERRED SKILLS - Experience in military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire departments. - Ability to work effectively in a team environment during high-stress situations. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Age Limit: Must not have reached 37th birthday (covered under special retirement category). - Security Clearance: Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance. - Drug Test: Must pass pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) and submit to random testing. - Physical Examination: Must successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. - Driver’s License: Must obtain and maintain a current valid U.S. driver’s license. - Schedule: Work 144 hours biweekly. Requires nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. - Protective Equipment: Required to wear PPE (helmets, gloves, respirators, etc.) continuously during shifts.
