About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, is hiring Police Officers for the West Los Angeles campus. This position involves performing a full range of police duties, including law enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol, control desk duty, and crime prevention. Officers are legally empowered to carry firearms and enforce laws within VA jurisdiction, responding to emergencies such as mental health crises, crimes in progress, and medical emergencies. The role requires community engagement, investigation of incidents, and collaboration with local courts and agencies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Patrol neighborhoods and the VA Healthcare center to deter and detect criminal activity.
- Respond to emergency calls, including mental health emergencies, assaults, domestic disputes, and accidents.
- Enforce laws and regulations by issuing citations or making arrests.
- Investigate incidents, gather evidence, interview witnesses/suspects, and prepare detailed reports.
- Participate in community policing strategies and outreach programs.
- Monitor activities to identify suspicious behaviors or law violations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify for the GS-6 level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in Federal service (or equivalent pay band).
Specialized Experience Includes:
- Maintaining order to protect life and property.
- Taking initial complaints and interviewing witnesses.
- Securing crime scenes and conducting limited searches.
- Responding to emergency situations.regulating traffic, controlling crowds, preventing crimes, and/or arresting violators.
Note: Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Resume must clearly document job title, duties, start/end dates (month/year), and hours worked per week.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Driver's License: Must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license (REAL ID compliant after May 7, 2025) and pass a Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination.
- Firearm Qualification: Must be able to possess firearms under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (Lautenberg Amendment). No convictions for misdemeanor/felony domestic violence. Must achieve and maintain qualification with agency-approved firearms.
- Drug Testing: Designated drug-testing position. Must pass urinalysis prior to appointment.
- Background Investigation: Subject to background/security investigation and character investigation.
- Medical/Psychological Exam: Must pass medical examination (vision, hearing, color distinction) and psychological examination.
- Physical Fitness: Must pass a timed Physical Fitness Test (1.5-mile run, push-ups, sit-ups) prior to final appointment.
- Training: Must successfully complete an 8+ week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Failure to complete may result in removal.
SELECTION PROCESS
Phase 1: Timed Virtual Written Examination evaluating critical thinking, reading comprehension, and job-relevant knowledge.
Phase 2: Oral Panel Interview with senior VA Police leaders.
Phase 3: Work Scenario-Based Interview assessing decision-making, judgment, and problem-solving; may include a sample written investigative report.
Post-Selection: Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and final background/medical checks.
