About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Airport Police Officer is a sworn peace officer authorized to carry a firearm. This role involves enforcing federal and state regulations, City of Los Angeles ordinances, and security, traffic, and safety rules at Los Angeles World Airports. Officers engage in law enforcement activities including uniformed foot, vehicle, motorcycle, and bicycle patrol, as well as plainclothes assignments. Responsibilities include making arrests, writing reports, and providing information to the public regarding department locations and operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enforce federal/state regulations, city ordinances, and airport security/traffic/safety rules.
- Conduct law enforcement activities via foot, vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, and plainclothes patrols.
- Perform arrests and complete detailed report writing.
- Provide information to the public regarding airport operations and department services.
- Maintain high standards of physical fitness and health to perform demanding duties.
- Complete comprehensive training programs including basic police recruit school and field training.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Age: At least 20 years old at time of application; 21 years old by police academy graduation.
- Education: Graduation from a U.S. high school, GED, equivalent from a U.S. institution, or California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate. A two or four-year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may substitute for high school requirements.
- U.S. Degrees: Must attach copy of diploma or transcripts at time of filing. Institution must be accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency.
- Foreign High School Diplomas: Not accepted.
- Foreign College Degrees: Must attach a credential evaluation report from NACES or AICE member at time of filing.
- Work Authorization: Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
- Driver’s License: Valid Class C driver’s license issued by California DMV required at time of appointment. No more than two moving violations/at-fault accidents or major moving violation convictions in the last 36 months.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Application Process: Must complete two separate applications:
1. Public Safety On-line application at myPD.joinlapd.com (select “Airport”).
2. Government Jobs application via Police Officer (2214) posting, selecting “Airport” in supplemental questionnaire.
- Supplemental Questionnaire: Must complete the entry-level Peace Officer Supplemental Questionnaire at time of filing. Failure to do so results in disqualification.
- Documentation: Must attach qualifying U.S. high school diploma/transcripts or foreign credential evaluation report BEFORE finalizing submission. Cannot attach after submission.
- Drug Screening: Required prior to appointment and during employment due to Safety Sensitive designation. History of illegal drug use may result in disqualification.
- Grooming/Appearance: Must comply with LAPD Manual Section 605, Airport Police Manual Chapter 6, and LA Port Police Policy Manual Section 1044 (including tattoo policies).
- Background Investigation: Includes Personal History Statement, fingerprinting, interviews, record checks, and polygraph examination. Felony convictions or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions result in disqualification.
SELECTION PROCESS
Open Competitive Basis.
1. Multiple-Choice Test (Qualifying): Evaluates spelling, reading, vocabulary, clarity. Passing score does not expire. Waivers available for certain POST/National Testing Network scores.
2. Physical Abilities Test (PAT) (Qualifying): Includes sit-ups, 300-meter sprint, push-ups, and 1.5-mile run. Passing valid for 12 months. Failure to attempt any event results in automatic fail.
3. Interview (100% Weight): Evaluates competencies such as problem-solving and communication. Determines rank on eligible list. Passing score expires after 12 months.
