About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), Bureau of Fire Prevention, is seeking two full-time Supervising Inspectors. Reporting to the Deputy Director of the Fire Alarm Inspection Unit, this role involves directing a subdivision of field inspectors responsible for life safety and emergency system inspections in public and private buildings. The position ensures conformance with codes, standards, plans, and specifications, while also handling administrative duties, technical inquiries, and high-level project monitoring to maintain public safety across the city. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Direct a subdivision of field inspectors performing life safety and emergency system inspections. - Monitor central stations to ensure conformance with codes, standards, plans, and specifications. - Interpret New York City codes, rules, and regulations. - Perform administrative duties, including evaluation of field reports, re-considerations, and technical inquiries. - Conduct meetings with design engineers and contractors. - Monitor high-level projects. - Conduct presentations. - Serve as a departmental representative for citywide code committees when required. - Perform related duties as needed. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must meet one of the following criteria: 1. Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations (light, heat, power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection, or communication systems), with at least 18 months in a managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity. OR 2. Five years of experience as described in option 1 (with at least 18 months in a managerial/supervisory capacity) PLUS one of the following: - 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college/university; OR - Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program at an accredited technical school. OR 3. Completion of an apprentice program (at least three years in length) in the electrical trade or electrical inspection, PLUS either: - Four years of experience as described in option 1; OR - Two years of experience as described in option 1 PLUS either 60 credits or two years of education as described in option 2. OR 4. A license as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect issued pursuant to New York State Education Law, PLUS at least two years of experience as described in option 1 (with at least 18 months in a managerial/supervisory capacity). OR 5. Equivalent education and/or experience to options 1, 2, or 3. Note: All candidates must have at least two years of experience as described in option 1, with at least 18 months in a managerial, administrative, or supervisory capacity. PREFERRED SKILLS - Excellent knowledge of life safety systems. - Excellent knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, Rules of the City of New York (RCNY), and Administrative Code. - Previous supervisory experience. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Exam Eligibility: This position is open ONLY to candidates who have taken and passed Exam 2071. - 55-a Program: Open to qualified persons with a disability eligible for the 55-a Program.
