About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The City and County of Denver’s Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking Certified Group Fitness Instructors for the Active Older Adults (AOA) program. This on-call, part-time position involves providing instruction in group fitness classes aimed at adults ages 50 and older. The role focuses on demonstrating proper techniques, ensuring a safe and fun environment, and promoting healthy aging through wellness and exercise activities. Instructors will teach functional fitness and group training classes across Denver’s network of recreation centers. Note that while SilverSneakers formats include Yoga, the department's current hiring efforts are focused on standard fitness classes excluding yoga. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Provide exceptional instruction to individuals of all fitness levels, with a focus on active older adults. - Demonstrate professional, safe, and effective class instruction while offering ongoing motivation and feedback. - Create enthusiastic and energetic class environments with an emphasis on safety and proper execution of movements. - Answer participant questions and utilize positive conflict resolution skills. - Meet the outstanding customer service standards of Denver Parks and Recreation. - Instruct SilverSneakers class formats such as Classic, CardioFit, Circuit, Splash, and BOOM. - Keep current on all certifications and industry practices. - Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: - Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate. - One (1) year of appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement. Experience: - None required. Licensure/Certifications: - Certification as an instructor/trainer in a fitness area (e.g., yoga, step aerobics, kick boxing, boot camp, hip-hop, interval training, sports performance, strength training, Pilates, Zumba, indoor cycling, core conditioning) by a nationally recognized organization (such as ACE or AFAA) at the time of application. - Current CPR/First Aid Certification at the time of application or within six months of hire date. - Licensure and certification must be kept current as a condition of employment. Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Community Health, Exercise Physiology, or related field. - Experience instructing SilverSneakers classes or fitness classes for active older adults. - Certification by Healthways in SilverSneakers class formats (Classic, CardioFit, Circuit, Yoga, Splash, or BOOM). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Work Authorization: Applicants must have valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment in the U.S. - Emergency Redeployment: Employees may be re-deployed to support core city functions during a citywide emergency declared by the Mayor. - Physical Demands: Ability to demonstrate physical movements and maintain an active teaching environment.
