About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is seeking an experienced, forward-thinking Chief Jailer to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for multiple detention facilities and all detention-related services. This executive-level role is responsible for ensuring the safe, secure, and humane operation of county detention centers, supervising a diverse workforce, and directing support functions including inmate services, transportation, medical coordination, classification, compliance, and administrative operations. The ideal candidate will build a culture of professionalism, accountability, and service while advising the Sheriff on detention operations and strategic planning.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct, manage, and evaluate operations of multiple detention facilities and support divisions
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and operational standards aligned with federal, state, and local laws and accreditation requirements
- Advise the Sheriff and executive command staff on detention operations, staffing needs, and strategic planning
- Oversee resource allocation and long-range planning for facility improvements and technology upgrades
- Ensure secure custody, care, and control of all individuals housed in county detention facilities
- Oversee intake, classification, housing, inmate movement, transportation, and release processes
- Direct detention support operations including medical coordination, mental health services, food services, and records management
- Ensure compliance with PREA, ADA, CALEA, NCCHC, ACA, and other regulatory or accreditation standards
- Coordinate emergency response planning, incident management, and critical event review
- Provide leadership, training, and professional development for command staff, supervisors, and detention officers
- Serve as primary liaison with courts, law enforcement agencies, medical providers, and community organizations
- Develop and administer budgets, monitor expenditures, and approve invoices
- Maintain statistics, records, and generate required reports for departmental and external use
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Management, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- Extensive experience (10+ years) in corrections, detention administration, or jail operations, including progressive supervisory or command-level responsibilities
- Demonstrated experience managing large-scale operations and personnel
- Comprehensive knowledge of detention/correctional standards, inmate management practices, and legal requirements governing detention facilities
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to pass background investigation and meet all agency hiring standards
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- All applicants must agree to and successfully pass a background investigation, drug screening, and polygraph
- Official, accredited college transcript is required at time of employment for all degrees/course work used to qualify

- Preferred qualifications include executive-level experience overseeing multiple facilities, certification through recognized professional organizations (e.g., ACA, NCCHC), and experience with jail management systems and data-driven decision-making
SELECTION PROCESS
