About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Vermont Department of Corrections is seeking Correctional Officers for the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington. This permanent, full-time position blends security work, human services, and leadership opportunities within a system focused on human change. The role offers intensive training and a unique 2-2-3 work schedule designed to improve work-life balance by providing regular periods of rest and predictable rotations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform security duties and supervise inmates within the correctional facility
- Provide human services and support inmate rehabilitation
- Participate in onsite training and annual mandated training
- Transport and supervise inmates outside the facility as required
- Respond to high-stress situations and potential physical assaults
- Work overtime and emergency duty as needed to maintain safe staffing levels
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
- High school graduation or equivalent AND two (2) or more years of full-time work experience
- One (1) year or more of college-level coursework AND one (1) year or more of full-time work experience
- Two (2) or more years of college-level coursework
Physical Requirements:
- Adequate physical condition to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation
- Ability to don a self-contained breathing apparatus and perform evacuation/search and rescue procedures
- Must pass a medical evaluation for respirator use per OSHA standards
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in a correctional setting
- Military experience
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license
- Overtime work is required and considered a condition of employment
- Must work weekends and holidays as assigned
- Must attend and pass annual mandated training
- Background Checks: Candidates must pass Vermont/national criminal record checks, DMV checks, and adult/child abuse registry checks
- Conviction History: Felony convictions require a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections. Misdemeanor convictions within the past five years under supervision or sanction make candidates ineligible
- PREA Requirements: Applicants must provide information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during pending investigations at previous institutions
