About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE The City of Des Moines is seeking an Accounting Division Manager to provide administrative oversight to the accounting division and expertise in financial reporting and controls. Working under the supervision of the Finance Director, this role involves extensive independent judgment and supervision of Accounting division employees. The position requires establishing effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders in a general office environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Plans, organizes, and directs the operations and structure of the Accounting division - Manages department work, project, and personnel activities within the Finance Department - Assists in strategic planning, policy development, and financial data collection and reporting - Oversees, trains, and evaluates staff involved in city-wide accounting processes - Assists in coordinating the annual audit and supports the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report preparation - Revises auditing and accounting procedures and related systems - Contributes to the development of enterprise financial software applications - Coordinates financial information input from all City Departments and serves as an in-house consultant - Supervises year-end adjustments and closing of accounting systems - Performs regular reconciliation for tracking activities within the accounting system MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited college or university - Extensive directly related experience in local government finance operations - Considerable experience with government enterprise accounting software - Equivalent combination of experience and training providing necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities - CPA certification is preferred SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, outside auditors, business organizations, state and federal officials, and the public SELECTION PROCESS - Application review (next scheduled review is June 30, 2026) - Post-employment physical examination and drug screening HOW TO APPLY - Submit an application through the official City of Des Moines career portal.
