About This Position

About the Role: The County of San Diego Sheriff's Office is hiring Deputy Sheriffs-Lateral to perform general law enforcement functions. Newly hired lateral deputies are assigned to Detentions, Court Services, or Law Enforcement Services based on department needs and the applicant's training and experience. Key Responsibilities: - Perform patrol, court services, and investigations. - Conduct arrests and apprehensions. - Supervise inmates. - Execute other general law enforcement duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: 1. POST Certification: Must meet California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy requirements, including current enrollment, completion within the past three years, or completion with less than a three-year break in service in specific Penal Code categories. 2. Age: At least 20.5 years at the Qualifications Shoot and 21 years at the time of appointment. 3. Education: U.S. high school diploma, GED certificate, or degree from an accredited college or university. 4. Criminal History: No felony convictions and must not be on probation. 5. Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. Special Requirements: - Vision: Correctable to at least 20/30; uncorrected vision must be at least 20/100 for glasses or hard lenses. - License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license prior to appointment. - Drug Policy: Illegal drug use and possession are strictly prohibited. - Desirable Traits: Effective communication, customer focus, teamwork, continuous learning, and ethical behavior. - Military experience in the United States is highly desirable. Selection Process: 1. Application Review: Automated and individual review of the online application and supplemental questions. 2. Qualifications Shoot Examination: Firearms testing involving handgun and shotgun rounds. 3. Pre-Screening Orientation: Mandatory for those who pass the shoot. 4. Background Investigation: Comprehensive review taking four to six months. 5. Assessments: Computer Voice Stress Analysis Exam and Employment Interview. 6. Selection Interview: Conducted by Sheriff's sworn management. 7. Medical and Psychological: Evaluation by a County-appointed psychologist and medical exam by a County physician. How to Apply: 1. Attach a copy of your P.O.S.T. certificate, waiver, re-certification, or a letter from the P.O.S.T. academy. 3.
