About the Role The County of San Diego Sheriff's Department is hiring experienced law enforcement professionals for Lateral Deputy Sheriff positions in Detentions or Court Services. Assignments are based on department needs and applicant training. The role involves general law enforcement functions, including the supervision and control of inmates, court services, and maintaining security in various environments. Key Responsibilities - Perform general law enforcement functions. - Supervise and control inmates in detention facilities. - Provide court services and maintain security in court environments. - Perform other duties as assigned based on the needs of the department. Minimum Qualifications - Age: Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. - Education: U.S. high school diploma or GED certificate, or a degree from an accredited college or university. - Background: Must have no felony convictions, must not be on probation, and must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien in the process of becoming a citizen. - Certification: Must possess one of the following: - BSCC or STC certificate from the County of San Diego Deputy Sheriff-Detentions/Court Services Academy. - BSCC or STC Adult Corrections Officer Core Course with less than a 3-year break in service, plus California POST PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course. - California POST Basic Law Enforcement Academy with less than a 3-year break in service in specific Penal Code categories. - California POST Re-Certification Course and valid POST Certificate. - Successful completion of Levels 1, 2, 3 or reserve format training modules within the last three years. - Current enrollment in a California POST, BSCC, or STC academy (must provide a letter from the Academy). Special Requirements - Vision: Correctable to at least 20/30; glasses or hard lenses minimum 20/100 uncorrected. - License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license prior to appointment. - Firearms: Must pass a Qualifications Shoot examination for handgun and shotgun. - Desirable Traits: Effective communication, customer focus, teamwork, continuous learning, ethical behavior, and adaptability to change. - Military service experience is highly desirable. Selection Process 1. Application Review: Automated evaluation of the online application and supplemental questions, followed by an individual review to confirm qualifying information. 2. Qualifications Shoot: Candidates meeting minimum qualifications must schedule and pass a firearms testing examination. 3. Pre-Screening Orientation: Candidates passing the shoot attend a mandatory orientation. 4. Background Investigation: Comprehensive investigation taking four to six months to complete. 5. Interviews and Exams: Completion of a Computer Voice Stress Analysis, Employment Interview, Selection Interview with sworn management, Psychological Evaluation, and Medical Exam.
