About this role

ABOUT THE ROLE As a Traffic Engineer in the Traffic Engineering Branch at the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), you will lead the planning, design, analysis, and review of various traffic engineering projects. You will apply advanced technical expertise to improve traffic flow, enhance roadway safety, and support data-driven design decisions across the county's transportation network. This role involves mentoring junior engineers and consultants while coordinating with internal and external partners to deliver projects aligned with MCDOT goals. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Prepare and review complex traffic engineering plans for projects including traffic signals, pavement marking, signing, intersection improvements, and low-cost safety projects - Develop complex project design concepts and criteria, and make recommendations for countermeasures - Supervise and review the work of staff, contractors, or consultants, and lead the quality control process in design and review phases - Compile, interpret, and analyze volume, speed, crash, delay, and queuing data using Synchro and other tools - Deliver projects within established schedules and budgets - Communicate traffic engineering alternatives and mitigation measures to leadership, engineers, contractors, and the public - Provide technical guidance to staff, departments, consultants, attorneys, regulatory agencies, and the public - Perform other job duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Two years of civil engineering experience - Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field - Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration, or by another state's technical board with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona Driver's license by the time of hire SELECTION PROCESS - Consideration is only given to candidates who submit online applications - Candidates will be contacted primarily through email and their Workday online application profile - Must pass a pre-employment background and/or fingerprint investigation as required by statute or policy, including drug and alcohol testing for safety-sensitive positions - Maricopa County is an equal opportunity employer; ADA accommodations can be requested by contacting MHRFeedback@maricopa.gov HOW TO APPLY - Submit an online application through the Maricopa County Workday portal EMPLOYMENT DETAILS - Location: 2901 W Durango St, Phoenix, AZ 85009 - Job Type: Full time, Unclassified - Department: Transportation - Posting Date: 09/09/26 - Application Deadline: Open Until Filled - Job Requisition ID: JR21898 - Working Conditions: Office, field, or customer-facing environments; mostly sitting with occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds; not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions - Benefits: Tuition reimbursement, exceptional work-life balance, growth opportunities, low-cost high-value healthcare, child care benefits (Maricopa County Kids Club), paid vacation, sick time, parental leave, extensive wellness program, and enrollment in the Arizona State Retirement System (11.98% per paycheck contribution with 100% employer match on Day 1)
