About This Position

ABOUT THE ROLE This is a full-time, open competitive position designed for individuals who currently do not have a valid law enforcement certification. The role involves general police work, including the enforcement of all ordinances, statutes, and laws in accordance with Police Department policies. Duties encompass crime prevention, investigation and detection, protection of life and property, traffic control, and maintaining law and order in the community. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Enforce federal, state, county, and city laws through de-escalation and apprehension of suspects - Effect arrests and ensure the effective detention of suspects taken into custody - Conduct investigations and various patrol activities as assigned - Serve as a first responder to disaster and emergency incidents - Communicate appropriately with law enforcement, dispatchers, citizens, witnesses, offenders, and victims - Safeguard and account for evidence and non-department property - Drive in an emergency manner when necessary and respond to requests for assistance - Monitor and direct traffic, conduct traffic stops, issue citations, investigate accidents, and aid motorists - Meet State of Nebraska and departmental qualification standards for firing a weapon - Perform administrative activities, including writing reports, serving warrants, issuing subpoenas, and staying informed on policies - Participate effectively in court procedures and required training activities MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - High school graduate or equivalent - Citizen of the United States prior to completion of certification training - Twenty-one (21) years of age prior to completion of the training program - Valid class "O" motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license - Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at the eleventh-grade level - Certified by a licensed physician as able to meet the physical requirements of a police officer - Good character as determined by a background investigation, which includes no convictions for crimes punishable by imprisonment for one year or more, no DUI convictions in the preceding two years, no punitive military discharge, no certification revocations, no domestic violence convictions, no protective orders disqualifying firearm possession, no pattern of substance abuse, no marijuana use in the preceding two years, and no other illegal drug use in the preceding five years SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Must maintain State of Nebraska law enforcement certification - Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, permanent residence, or authorization to work without sponsorship - Applicants must not use all caps in their application - Subject to pre-employment evaluations including driving, credit, criminal, hearing, drug, functional capacity, psychological, vision, and medical tests SELECTION PROCESS 1. Physical Ability Test (PAT): The first step, scheduled at the Public Safety Training Center (Pass/Fail, with a passing time of 3 minutes 52 seconds). 2. Multiple-choice examination: Candidates who pass the PAT will be invited to this phase, scheduled for the week of August 10, 2026. 3. Final scoring: Based 100% on the multiple-choice examination score, with veteran preference points added if applicable. 4. All testing must be completed in Omaha and cannot be administered remotely.
