About This Position
ABOUT THE ROLE
Under general supervision, this position performs police patrol, traffic control and enforcement, and initial investigations into criminal and non-criminal activity. The role involves promoting crime prevention, apprehending criminals, and enforcing local ordinances, State, and Federal laws and regulations in a designated area of an assigned shift to ensure the safety and protection of life and property.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive briefing at shift commencement and inspect assigned vehicle and weaponry for operability.
- Respond to radio dispatched calls, assist allied law enforcement and Fire Department, and render first aid.
- Perform preliminary investigations into reported or observed criminal activity, including felonies, misdemeanors, and ordinance violations.
- Investigate non-criminal calls such as civil disturbances, family disputes, and missing persons.
- Serve as Juvenile Officer, investigate crimes involving minors, and follow up on truancy cases.
- Apprehend, arrest, transport, and book suspects according to established procedures.
- Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or foot to deter crime and check buildings for illegal entry.
- Enforce traffic ordinances, regulate traffic, perform speed control, and issue citations.
- Prepare and maintain reports, prepare cases for court presentation, and provide testimony.
- Perform community relations duties and speak to school or community groups on crime prevention.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must currently serve as a full-time sworn law enforcement officer in good standing in a comparable position.
- Must have a minimum of two years of full-time experience.
- Must have successfully completed the Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy and possess ILETSB certification, or qualify for Out of State Reciprocity (including Mandatory Firearms Training, Law for Illinois Police, and Equivalency Exam).
- Must be at least 21 years of age and under 35 years of age by the date of the exam (subject to statutory exceptions).
- Must possess an associate's degree or 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours) of college credit from an accredited institution, OR 24 months of honorable active duty in the US Armed Forces, OR 180 days of active combat duty.
- Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Subject to a 12-month probationary period, which may be extended for unsatisfactory performance or extended leave.
- Lateral candidates are considered entry-level employees for shift seniority and vacation time selection.
SELECTION PROCESS
1. Interview.
2. Background Check (takes approximately 4 weeks for candidates with a passing interview score).
3. Polygraph (typically given two weeks to complete once the background check is passed and openings exist).
4. Psychological Evaluation, Physical, and Drug Screening (conducted after a conditional offer is made and accepted, typically given two weeks to complete).
- Acceptable candidates are placed on a lateral entry eligibility list in alphabetical order for up to two years.
