You Weren't Invited by Accident: Rethinking Imposter Syndrome
If you've ever felt that quiet drop in your stomach after a promotion, a stretch assignment, or a seat at a table you fought to reach, you know the feeling. Imposter syndrome doesn't announce itself. It whispers.
It Wears Different Faces
Imposter syndrome isn't one thing. For someone early in their career, it sounds like I'm not experienced enough. For a seasoned leader, it shifts to I should know this by now. For professionals navigating international teams or unfamiliar cultures, it becomes I'm reading this room wrong. Background and identity shape the volume, too.
Research consistently shows women, particularly women of color and those in senior roles, experience it more acutely- often attributing success to luck while attributing setbacks to themselves. Men more often externalize doubt or mask it as perfectionism. Neither version is weakness. Both are human responses to environments where the stakes, and the scrutiny, are high.
Why It Exists (And Why That's Okay)
Imposter syndrome tends to appear precisely when you're growing. New rooms, new responsibilities, and new visibility trigger it because your internal map hasn't caught up to your external reality yet. It's not a signal you're unqualified. It's a signal you've moved.
Strategies That Actually Help
The goal isn't to silence the doubt- it's to stop letting it drive.
Name it, then narrate it. Say it out loud to a trusted peer. Naming it strips its power. More often than not, the moment you say it, you find others who have walked a similar path.
Collect the evidence. Keep a running file of wins, kind feedback, and moments you delivered. You've likely risen to meet more challenges than you even recall. Doubt is loud; data is louder.
Reframe the discomfort. Nervousness before a big presentation isn't proof you're unprepared- it's proof you care. Consider reframing anxious or nervous feelings as 'adrenaline'- like being at the starting line of a race after months of foundational training.
Ask, don't assume. In new cultures or teams, curiosity beats performance every time.
Mentor down and reach up. Helping someone behind you reminds you how far you've come; leaning on someone ahead reminds you no one does this alone.
The Room Chose You
Here's the truth worth carrying into your next high-stakes moment: the people who invited you into the room weren't fooled. They saw something real. Your job isn't to prove you belong- it's to do the work only you can do, now that you're here.
Walk in anyway.
